History of... Slot Machines
You may think that slot machines are a pretty recent invention, say, 1950s or so? The answer to this is no! The first slot machines were made around 120 years ago so are indeed far from being a modern invention! The first slot machine was made by Charles Fey in 1895. A few years later in 1907, Fey teamed up with Mills Novelty Company and together they manufactured the ‘Mills Liberty Bell’ slot machine. The casing of the machine was made out of cast iron and on the front of the machine was a casted image of a classic looking Liberty Bell with the reels being made of playing cards. The machine went in to further development and they added such features that can be seen today on the machines such as a ringing noise when something was won. The team removed this feature however, but it’s nice to see that the feature is used again now on modern day slot machines across the world.
Further things were changed on the slot machine, such as the removal of the playing cards for reels and in place of these were cards with the classic fruit symbols on such as the plum, bar and cherry. A massive 30,000 of these machines were made weighing in each over 90 pounds and all made out of cast iron. Eventually, the company produced lighter and more attractive slot machines, where in place of the cast iron casing, the main material used was wood. In the late 1920’s, some revolutionary changes were made to the slot machine’s design which really brought the design and user-friendly aspects right up to speed and an even more popular choice for people as a fun leisure activity. Some amazingly striking designs were made with all colorful and unique themes.
Times became hard in 1909 however when an anti-gambling movement surfaced and managed to get the slot machines banned first of all in San Francisco in 1909 and a year later, in Nevada. 3 years later, the slot machines had been banned in California and by the 1930’s; most of the population was anti-gambling and therefore anti-slot machine. Gradually however, attitudes started to change again and there was a resurgence of popularity with slot machines especially in Las Vegas and other places in the States.
